Fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella sp. in Carcasses

چکیده
To the Editor: Fluoroquinolone (FQ)-resistant Salmonella has been isolated from patients in Taiwan (1–7). Recently, a report further indicated that several patients were infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Schwarzengrund with high-level FQ resistance (1). S. Schwarzengrund has never been isolated from food animals in Taiwan. We report the isolation of FQresistant strains from pork and broiler carcasses sampled from 2000 to 2003: 27 in 2000, 3 in 2001, 4 in 2002, and 2 in 2003. These isolates made up 18.85% of the 191 Salmonella strains obtained from pork and broiler carcasses in the study period. Of these isolates, 16 FQ-resistant S. Schwarzengrund strains were further analyzed to elucidate the possible mechanism of FQ resistance. Ciprofloxacin MIC levels in these isolates ranged from 4 to 16 μg/mL, and all had high-level nalidixic acid resistance (>1,024 μg/mL). All of the 16 investigated strains displayed mutations possibly associated with highlevel FQ resistance. The mutation sites included 2 sites (Ser83Phe and Asp87Gly) in the quinolone resistance–determining region (QRDR) of gyrA, 2 sites (Thr57Ser and Ser80Arg) in the QRDR of parC, and 1 site (Ser458Pro) in the QRDR of parE, respectively. Four strains had mutations in the QRDR of gyrA and parC only but not in the QRDR of parE (Table). In conclusion, high-level FQ resistance was detected in S. Schwarzengrund isolated from pork and chicken in Taiwan. Specific mutation sites of gyrA, parC, and parE were associated with high-level FQ resistance in all the isolates investigated. Our results warrant further investigation of the public health consequences of FQ use in food animals in Taiwan.

Typhoidal Salmonella and Emerging Resistance in Outbreak Proportions
Introduction: Typhoidal Salmonella causes an invasive infection resulting in 200 000 deaths among 20 million patients annually. Typhoid remains a public health problem in Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and South America. Traveler’s diarrhea caused by Salmonella is common in Asia. Outbreaks of typhoidal Salmonella resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and t...
متن کاملContribution of target gene mutations and efflux to decreased susceptibility of Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium to fluoroquinolones and other antimicrobials.
The mechanisms involved in fluoroquinolone resistance in Salmonella enterica include target alterations and overexpression of efflux pumps. The present study evaluated the role of known and putative multidrug resistance efflux pumps and mutations in topoisomerase genes among laboratory-selected and naturally occurring fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains. St...
متن کاملEfficacy of using a sponge sampling method to recover low levels of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, and aerobic bacteria from beef carcass surface tissue
Recovery of aerobic bacterial populations, as well as low levels of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium from beef carcasses was determined by sponge (SP) and excision (EX) sampling during the course of three separate studies. For the first study, samples were taken from three points on the processing line: (1) pre-wash, (2) post-wash, and (3) after 24 h in the chill cooler. SP r...

متن کاملIdentification of Salmonella spp. and Salmonella typhimurium by a multiplex PCR-based assay from poultry carcasses in Mashhad- Iran
Poultry meat has been identified as one of the principal foodborne sources of Salmonella. In this preliminary study the prevalence of Salmonella spp. and its typhimurium serovar contamination of broiler carcasses, were determined. Using the rinse test method, numbers of 60 samples, representing 20 broiler flocks, were collected from poultry carcasses after the chilling stage in the processing l...
